Overall, I am really happy with how this project has turned out. The main aim from the beginning was to create something that could communicate ideas around my chosen SDG in a way that didn’t feel boring or overly educational, especially for a younger audience. By using a narrative driven, game inspired approach, I feel the project succeeds in making these ideas more engaging and easier to understand.
The pixelated visual style and inspiration from games like EarthBound played a huge role in shaping the project. This helped create a consistent world that feels familiar and approachable, while also supporting the satirical tone of the story. Choices around colour, typography, UI elements, and layout were all made with this in mind, ensuring that nothing felt out of place or distracting from the experience. Keeping interactions simple and linear was also an important decision, as it made the prototype easier to navigate for the intended age group.
Bringing everything together into a fully linked prototype was a big step in the project. With over 150 frames, each with their own animations and links, it was time consuming but rewarding to see it all function as a complete experience. Carrying out some basic user testing helped confirm that the game worked as intended and that users could progress through it without confusion, which gave me confidence in the design decisions I had made.
While I am satisfied with the current outcome, there is still room to develop the project further. More extensive user testing with people closer to the target age range would be beneficial, and additional interactivity or branching paths could help deepen engagement. That said, as a proof of concept, I believe the project successfully demonstrates how interactive digital design and storytelling can be used to introduce younger audiences to important social and urban issues in an accessible and enjoyable way.
