Over the course of this module we will be tasked with recreating assets and interfaces in order to understand the process before we apply it to our own work. In this page you will see my attempts at recreating these.

Icons

Our first master apprentice task was to recreate some icons. Kyle provided us with a selection of icons to choose from. These belong to Kayak, a travel booking company who I have actually used before. I recreated 6 of these icons choosing to focus on ones that felt most different from one another to try and get a decent range in. I am happy with how these turned out and I actually really enjoyed the process. I thought it would be really challenging but it was quite pleasant.

Navigation Bars

Our next master apprentice task was to recreate some navigation bars. I felt before that I should have recreated all of the icons Kyle provided us so this time I did just that. I recreated all 9 different navigation bars. This wasn’t as time consuming as I thought it would be due to the fact that most of the design remained the same across the variations. The only differences tended to be little tweaks such as colour and the absence or presence of text. This was an enjoyable task and it has definitely made me more confident in icon creation.

Music App

The next master apprentice task was to recreate a screen from a music app, much like our own. This one felt great to get just right as it seemed a touch more visual. This one took a little longer than others as it itself included icons and a navigation bar. That being said I was well prepped. A lot more focus was required in regards to padding and sizing this time, something to consider going forward with my own music app. I think it came together very nicely and is very accurate to the example given.

Banking App

Although it’s not for this class I decided to apply this master apprentice thinking to my banking project. As it was of a much larger scale I felt I had best prepare myself and I knew these recreation tasks were perfect for that. I spent a lot of time creating icons for this one, whilst it may not seem like there is a lot they are all very subtle and I think that speaks on how well designed Monzos UI is. I had a blast recreating these screens so much so that I decided to create a dark mode in the style of my own bank brand. I think this considered approach really made a difference and allowed me to create a much better final product.
