A 500 word reflection on this module.
<aside> 💡
Going into this module, I thought it was an area that I was quite strong in already. I have had the chance to create a portfolio before and I've written many CVs, but it was all very different this time for one main reason: I had actual work behind me.
This module felt as though it built upon the foundations laid by other modules, and that's a good thing. The work during this module was incredibly relevant considering we were preparing for placement roles. A highlight for me during this process could be found in either the creation of my CV or in my Pitch Presentation. These two projects taught me the most and pushed me to reflect deeply on my skills and areas for growth.
The CV project changed how I view design, which might sound kind of crazy. Before this module, I saw CVs as simple documents to list my experience and skills. However, this project taught me the importance of information architecture and how valuable a skill that actually is. I learned that how you organise and present information can be just as important as the content itself. Through multiple iterations, I discovered the power of visual hierarchy, the strategic use of whitespace, and how to guide a reader's eye through a document. This was about creating a clear, scannable document that communicates my value quickly and effectively to potential employers.
With the Pitch Presentation, I learned a harder lesson, my design work will not carry me to my goal alone. I have to improve on my tertiary skills, so to speak. During the presentation, I realised that no matter how strong my portfolio or design work is, if I cannot communicate my process, explain my decisions, and present myself confidently, I will struggle to convince employers of my abilities. Presenting is likely to be a large part of my work going forward, so I really feel urged to spend some time improving upon this. Public speaking and the ability to articulate design thinking clearly are skills I need to develop alongside my technical abilities.
Throughout this module, I've also gained a deeper understanding of professional practice in the design industry. The module helped me recognise that being a designer isn't just about creating beautiful interfaces or solving problems visually. It's about understanding business contexts, communicating with stakeholders, working within constraints, and continuously learning. The portfolio development process taught me to curate my work thoughtfully, telling a story about who I am as a designer rather than simply showcasing every project I've completed.
Moreover, the reflective exercises throughout the module have helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses more clearly. I've realised that while I'm confident in my technical design skills, I need to work on my ability to receive and implement feedback constructively, to work more collaboratively in team settings, and to manage my time more effectively when juggling multiple projects.
Overall, this module has been transformative. It has equipped me with practical tools, a polished CV, a strong portfolio and presentation skills, whilst also fostering a mindset of continuous improvement and self reflection that I know will serve me well throughout my career.
