A friend of mine asked me to create a cover for his newest single. This one titled “Move Your Body”. The single is a fast techno track and he needed visuals to convey this.

Ideation

I have never designed any kind of cover before so this was exciting. I started by looking at some similar works and I had noticed the use of little simple illustrations. This is an area I am trying to develop my skills in so I began my approach with this in mind. Here are a few sketches.

These quick sketches helped me understand what works best within the limitations of the vinyl sleeve. (He requested the cover be a vinyl).

Approach

His artist alias is “Nai” I felt I could use this in my approach perhaps to add some humour or personality to the cover. The obvious thing being that Nai sounds like Neigh, like a horse. I wondered if I could creatively implement a horse into the design.

I found this cool website that allowed me to turn images into rasterised ones so I tried combing this with the horse idea, heres how it turned out.

I actually really liked this one but unfortunately it was giggled out of competition. It felt a little too unserious so I knew I needed to hone in on that serious attitude that was to be presented.

Results

I ended up creating around 30 different but similar covers for this project. I gave these to the artist and allowed him to pick his favourite of the bunch.

These covers came out so much better. This project is something I worked on for quite a while. I worked on it between coursework. It is something I found quite frustrating to work on, especially as the “client” was a friend and I felt the need to provide him with a good piece. I think that was the most interesting part of this project, the effect our relationship had on the actual work. it is something I will always remember going forward and will be a serious consideration for any work I do going forward.

Here are the two he picked.
