UDHR

For this project we were tasked to pick one of 30 articles within the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

To begin I started by going over all 30 articles and choosing which ones resonate with me the most and ones that sparked some ideas.

The articles I found most inspiring were:

Article 17 - The right to own property

Article 3 - The right to life, liberty and security

Article 23 - The right to work

Article 4 - No one shall be held in slavery or servitude

Article 15 - The right to a Nationality

Out of the 5 I chose 2 of them stood out to me in regards to inspiring a design. Article 17 and article 23. These are issues that I believe to be actively involved in where as others I feel I may never have experience with due to my own personal circumstances.

After learning about different design styles and movements I decide to base this project on one. However the brief to me comes across as very professional and lowkey. I believe this “poster” should be presented as an official UN document so thats what I will be aiming for using a design style i’ve recently learned of.

After some research and looking back on previous weeks notes I settled on Swiss Style or The International Typographic style. To me this style is graphic design, its clean, functional and beautiful. I think its utilitarian themes work really well for UDHR as it is something that must serve its function considering its purpose.

With these works the thing that speaks most to me is the text, more specifically, how the text is formatted and used. They somehow emphasise the text using its geometric shapes and visual weight to create a design within itself, when in reality its just text. I plan to chase a similar idea within this project whilst keeping it professional and on brand for the UN.
