Today we had some of the folks from the employability office come in to take a look at our CV’s.

Feedback

I have been happy with my CV for some time now as I began development about 2 weeks ago, so I was eager to get some constructive feedback. I was told that for the most part my CV is looking really good which is great to hear, I think I put a lot of work into it early on which seems to have paid off. I was advised that there could be some room for improvements in regards to relating my work experience with that of a prospective career path. Suggestions such as translating my customer facing experience into the likes of client facing design work. I understand this perspective but it felt a little off to me, so I decided to run it by Daniel for good measure. Daniel understood my hesitation to implement this within my writing, he said my experience is more of a service industry rather than retail, which I would agree with. With this in mind Daniel suggested that I focus more on being upfront about how my skills translate rather than suggesting a relation like a have done. He felt that the links between my experience and future roles were strong enough to be said explicitly which is actually great to hear.

Domains

We didn’t run a lecture or anything today which allowed us to work some more on our CV’s and plan ahead whilst we could. I got chatting to Daniel about planning for our portfolios which is our next brief. He gave me a heads up and advised me to get a domain registered as soon as possible. We looked at domains last year when exploring branding but this time it’ll be a domain for ourselves. He mentioned something which I always never understood and it was how professionals always seemed to have personalised email addresses, apparently this is done through the domain host which is super interesting. With that in mind to make my CV a little better I could get a personalised email address just to make it seem a more legit and establish a professional attitude.

I decided to do a bit of research into domains and web hosting and it seems that my approach to how I design my portfolio should influence who I choose to host it with. Some hosts offering simple transferable hosting with tools such as wordpress, others having issues with specific tools and slower DNS. There’s a lot to unpack and I want to make sure I make the right choice as this site could be something that stays with me for some time.

Reflection

<aside> 💡

Quite a slow class today compared to yesterday. I mentioned that I was enjoying the momentum of 301 and that holds true. I’m eager to get rolling with the rest of this module, things such as the portfolio and cover letters, I think that’s an area I may work on pre-emptively. It was great to hear that I wasn’t missing much from my CV so I can get that tidied up easily and ready to be sent out. As Daniel said it’s a good idea to have a look at some domains and begin planning how I’ll be building my site and maybe start considering design too. Really excited for the placement talks to begin, I’m eager to hear from Slice next week so I have got plenty to look forward to in that regard.
