We started week 2 by looking at some cave paintings from long, long ago, or as Paul called them, Prehistoric Graffiti.

I have always been a big fan of graffiti even just senseless tags on bins and such. I think the nature of graffiti is what I admire most about it, the urge to be seen, the need to express. As art has become a very pretentious space graffiti remains human in its expression.

Type is the clothing for words

We discussed how different fonts when applied to words convey very different things. This is a concept I am familiar with but I don’t think I have quite understood the depth of it just yet.

Fonts such as comic sans are interpreted as unprofessional and childish and for good reason. Where as a font such as Bodoni may convey a more professional look.

Johannes Gutenberg

Gutenberg is known for inventing the first mechanical printing press in 1439. He used this press to print the Gutenberg bible, one of the earliest books in the world to be printed from movable type.

The printing press was comprised of small metal type, similar to the movable type that had been used in Asia, however Gutenbergs press developed a casting system and used metal which made production much easier.

45 Years on from Gutenbergs invention, the movable type had spread to over 240 cities and been used to produce around 20 million books.

Gutenbergs invention revolutionised print as it made it possible for books to be manufactured on an enormous scale compared to before and for relatively cheap too.
