James Victore

As you can see James Victore is a very provocative artist. He captures what I would describe as anti art, often with a spin on it. He published a book called “Feck Perfunction” in which he states his rules for design. They are as follows:

  1. Learn the rules and break them.

  2. Don’t decorate crap.

  3. There are no ugly typefaces only ugly designers.

  4. There is no right font, create your own.

  5. Sometimes the wrongest type choice is the best.

  6. Avoid any tricks available from a pull-down menu

  7. Technology is not the answer, you are.

  8. Avoid trends

  9. F*ck ‘Perfucntion’

  10. Following the rules makes your work look like everyone else’s.

De Stijl

De Stijl is a group of artists based in Amsterdam. Including names such as Theo Van Doesberg and Piet Mondrian.

Their style focused on geometric shapes and primary colours. Its origins were partly a reaction to Art Deco. It sought to reduce the quality of the art in order to create a universal visual language suitable for the modern era.

Whilst some De Stijl pieces resonate with me, their idea of creating a universal visual language is something I am really on board with, the question for me however is did they achieve so?

You can see some of their work below.
