We started this week by calling back to some of the principals we learnt in week 3.
We revised fundamentals such as type terminology, type hierarchy, formatting options and visual weight. Its always good to have a refresher especially when the content is relevant like it is today.
We then looked at typography for screen. We started by discussing the idea of branding and how typography influences it. To demonstrate this we looked at BBC’s in house font ‘BBC Reith’.

It was really interesting to see the benefits of developing a font for a company, such as the amount of money that could be saved and how it can shift the public perception in terms of their corporate identity.
It’s notable that there exists over 200,000 typefaces and yet brands like BBC and Netflix still choose to design their own. I find this to be the sign of a healthy industry and leads me to believe that design is an art that still has a lot of time to develop in new ways and find purpose in new places.
We were tasked with creating a typescale design for an extract of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. We started by coming up with some keywords that convey the text to possible readers.
Once we had our keywords we then used those keywords to add character to the design. We did so by using Google fonts to source some suitable fonts for our design. I settled on using ‘Uncial Antiqua’ for my header and ‘Alice’ for my body text.

We then created a type scale for the text using a ratio. The ratio I selected was 1.5, I also rounded the font size to a factor of 8. Here is how that looks.
